16 Days Of Activism

In recognition of 16 days of activism against violence to women and girls Alex, our TLC Manager, has spoken to lots of our ladies as to how they access the safe place within themselves. It seems we have a musical bunch!  Here goes….

🍞🥖 “I make bread, I love the ritual, the process, the smell. Every loaf is different. Making bread almost feels spiritual.”

🎧  “I listen to Ted talks on YouTube. They give me motivation, guidance and have been my survival. They catch me every time.”

🏌🏻‍♀️ “Golf!”

🧁. “Cakes, I bake a cake.”

📺  “I take myself into my bedroom, shut the door and lose myself in a programme I want to watch.”

🎤  “I sing, my karaoke machine comes out, This Is Me is my favourite.”

🍲. “Cooking, Caribbean food. I love the smell, reminds me of my childhood and family. I cook a mean Caribbean Stewed Chicken!”

🙌🏾. “Maya Angelou every time, she’s my heroine. Still I Rise is the most emotive piece of writing. I watch her on you tube, she’s a total inspiration to me.”

🙏🏻. “I turn to Jesus; I turn to him for my comfort.”

💐 “I organise my space, make everything pretty.”

🧶 “I crochet, I make blankets. It’s therapeutic and takes me away from my thoughts.”

🧘🏾‍♀️ “I listen to my body, if I need to rest I will. I look after myself now.”

🎶🎶 “I blast music…. ANY MUSIC!”

📻. “I listen to Andra Day’s - Rise Up. And I’ll rise up, I’ll rise like the day, I’ll rise up, I’ll rise up unafraid, I’ll rise up and I’ll do it a thousand times again.”

🛁 “Bath every time, lots of bubbles, I take the time to recognise how far I’ve come. I love Corinne Bailey Rae and blast it whilst in the bubbles.”

💃🏽. “I love to dance; I love a traditional folk dance from my country. It reminds me that I can continue to fight on and that I can do this. Reminds me of my heritage and I feel stronger.”

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence against women is an international campaign originating from the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute. “16 Days,” as it has become known, was launched and continues to be coordinated by the Centre for Women’s Global Leadership.
